GAVS – AIRPLANES, NOT ONLY PICTURES

(To Be Continued...)

The genoese section is the latest born among the five sections of national GAVS; it is the reference point in Liguria and nearby zone, but it is also a peculiar section different from other.
Since its birth, it has monitored and assessed the presence of military aircrafts of the latest World War ended on the bottom of the sea along the Italian shores. In particular nearby San Bartolomeo Al Mare there is a precious presence, now almost forgotten: the only "survived" FIAT BR 20, the crew of which was awarded with the prestigious Italian military award Medaglio d'Oro al V.M. (Golden Medal to Military Courage).
The GAVS section verified, through an interesting and articulated feasibility study, a complex program for "special restoration" of the wreck after the recovery to be performed with a special tool, sponsored and built using our project, by a shipyard which collaborated with our work team. Alas the objective difficulty of the management of the after-recovery phase and the lack of funds have frustrated the efforts of our section.
Currently a restoration is in place for the Link Trainer of Edwing Link, owned by the local Aero Club di Genova. Sadly, due to the logistical problems of the current site used (the restoration is not directly possible on the aircraft even if it is not of particularly huge dimensions), the work is suspended, and the various components of the aircraft are not assembled and stored (some of them already restored) at our headquarter.
We also work about the history of the reproduction of a SVA V owned by "Fondazione ANSALDO", stored in a huge glass case near the international airport "Cristoforo Colombo" of Genoa.
The replica has installed many original pieces, like the engine, radiator, propeller and other minor pieces. The location where it is shown is of great visibility, but it is not technically speaking the ideal place: this is an urgent issue that has to be dealt with. There exist also the following "permanent projects" active at our section:

    • The seaplane base at Genoa and aviation in Liguria
    • The earliest airlines :
       * SANA and its competitors
       * Aquila Airways
    • Flight fields, and in particular the one of Bolzaneto
    • Genoese aeronautics industries: ANSALDO, PIAGGIO and C.I.V.E.S.
    • Flight schools; R.U.N.A and C.I.V.E.S. of Varazze
    • Census and restoration of aircraft wrecks at sea
    • Radio station of Moro Mountain
    • Genoa aeronautics and the raid Paris-Rome of 1909: the stop at Genoa
    • Other aeronautics events of the past.

There are other interesting projects currently under review, but time and resources are limited, even if of good quality.
Let forgive us for this tiny act of presumption...
